** spoiler alert ** Okay. So I read it. I have completed the series. But, I have to say, something was a bit off with this book. I don't think it worked very well with the other two. Firstly; where did this Holborn fellow come from? At the end of the second book, there was no mention of him. None. At all. And, all of a sudden, at the beginning of the third book, she's fallen in love with him, fallen out of love with him, gotten engaged to him, and all of a sudden he's DEAD? Then there was Farmer. I liked Farmer, truly I did, but what about Rosto? Farmer just appeared out of thin air! I didn't understand. Tamora kept dropping hints and clues that Rosto and Beka would get together- or at least I took it like that. Rosto barely appeared in the book! For that matter, not much in the second book either, although apparently he was pining for her. But I have to say, I might be a little biased, as I am a firm Beka/Rosto-shipper. And Tunstall . . . was . . . unexpected . . . The character that the author built up for Tunstall in the first two books did not seem to match up with the Tunstall in this book. Oh, he was the same all right, at first, but then all a sudden he's a traitor? I think that this book introduced too many new things to be entirely good.
BUT, I do like this book. It is a very good book, and I love Tamora Pierce and all her books. I just didn't feel that it was a very fitting end to the series, if it is the end. So, I think this book would be an alright stand-alone, I suppose, or a spin-off. But I felt that this book was rather rushed, and all the work the author took in building up the characters just went wonky. :3
