This is my first John Buchan read and-WOW-can he write! You'd never know this book was written in the early 1900s. His descriptions, action and mystery were proportioned just right. The short 160 pages was so much better than other flowery, so-called great classics of the time. I also give credit to reading the Oxford World's Classics version, which provided explanations for all the Scottish phrases, a timeline of the life of John Buchan and an extensive introduction that made me understand the author better. Most interesting, Mr. Buchan published his first book at 17, earning him a scholarship for college. I wish our modern kids had such motivation.
