After boarding a small regional jet last week, I settled into my seat with a hearty snack and pulled out a copy of Alive! It didn't take too long for me to realize that this was an enormous mistake. Alive! is not a book for the faint of heart, nor is it a book for anyone with immediate prospects of eating or flying.

One week later, with no travel scheduled for a couple of weeks, I broke out my copy for attempt 2, and I haven't wanted to put it down since. It is an incredible story that reminds readers that (in the paraphrased words of one of the stranded Uruguayans), life can be hard but it is worth living. It was inspiring to read how the group of passengers bonded together and carried each other through such a desperate time, and also to read their perceptions of the ordeal after the 16 survivors were rescued.

I was not too appalled by the cannibalism issue. Yes, there were parts that, as I mentioned, you wouldn't want to read while eating, but I think that most people would...more
