really liked it

Guterson has had hits and misses. I was surprised to realize I've read almost everything he's written (perhaps because he's a Seattle native). I liked this book and its pacing. I was anxious to get back to it every time I put it down, and to me that's the sign of a good book.

I read the criticism and sure there were a few places that it might have been more polished but overall I thought it was a well-crafted novel of great merit. It is dark but you can see the care he took in the telling. There are lots of strands that reconnect in places and lots of detail to keep track of so he didn't 'drop a stitch' as it were.

Is it a book mostly about Ed, or is it a book mostly about Diana? Both are trying hard to overcome their pasts and propelled by different drives as a result of their nature and nurture. I'd recommend you read it.
