As many times as I read this series I am always struck by just how great an author R.A. Salvatore is. Such vivid settings! Such lush descriptive writing! Such character development! This first book in The Legend of Drizzt series chronicles the early life and upbringing of Drizzt Do'Urden as he tries to stay true to his heart despite the harsh cruelty of his family and society. He is a drow (dark elf) and that means he has to be cruel, conniving, and murderous, like his family members. But Drizzt isn't any of those things. He is a strong warrior, yes, but he is also compassionate, mirthful, and one of the most honorable characters you will meet. He loves life and beauty, and wants to live life according to his own values. It is so uplifting to read this book because you really get a feel for how much suffering Drizzt encountered in his early years. Yet despite this, he remains true to himself. And of course pretty much every scene with Guenhwyvar, Drizzt's steadfast panther companion, made me want to stand up and cheer! They have such a deep, szpecial bond which is so beautiful to read about! And boy, can R.A. Salvatore describe a fight scene! They are so descriptive you almost feel as if you are right there in the middle of the action! This is a great series to read if you enjoy well-crafted fantasy stories with strong characters.
