This wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting either. My main gripe is silly, maybe, but I was expecting selkies and not mermaids. But come on, why would someone discover an island and say, "There are mermaids here, so I think I'll name it Selkie Island!" What's next? "I've discovered a country where there are a lot of unicorns, so I think I'll name it Pegasonia. And that town has a lot of dragons, so I think I'll name it Griffinville."

Also, the main character seemed a little too easily swayed by the attitudes of those around her. I found it hard to believe that someone who had grown up so far removed from the class structure of the island would put so much emphasis on whether it was wrong for her to date someone "beneath" her in social status. It would have been more convincing if she'd been summering on the island every year and been subjected to that prejudice all along. As it was, I just kept wondering, "Why does she even care what they think? She's only been on this island for a few days."

The only other thing I could think of that bothered me was how easily she was convinced that one of the characters was a supernatural creature. She's a practical girl who obsesses over science and didn't even watch Disney cartoons as a kid because she was so busy studying, yet just a few things make her believe in myths. If she'd seen the glimpse of a tail or something that was even mildly convincing, it would have made more sense. As it is, her reasoning was pretty weak. Oh my goodness, that guy lives close by the ocean! (Um. It's an island.) He has oceanic figures decorating his home! (It's an island. I'm sure lots of people have oceanic decorations in their homes. Hers does, in fact.) His home has red and gold in the decoration scheme! He's said he's out at night a lot! *gasp* No. Really? It's just . . . weak.

Other than that though, it wasn't bad. I think it might be more appealing to people in the age group it's aimed at.
