There were points in this book when I thought to myself, "Maybe I've been too hard on Clive Cussler, this is a pretty cool book. I'm really into this!" But then the robotic dialogue, single-dimensional characters, and too-good-to-be-true resolution to EVERY SINGLE ACTION SCENE got to me. There was an excellent historically factual prologue about an attempt to find the Northwest Passage but it just got lame and very long to the finish from there. 2.4 stars.

One thing I learned from this is that a character struggling between bad and good (or a character who has his own understanding of good vs. bad) is infinitely more interesting in a novel than a character who always goes one way or the other. That Dirk Pitt and his do-gooder kids are just too darn perfect! I'm staying away from Cussler from now on.
