Beigbeder in Love last three years is a prototypical self-centered modern guy who makes too much money, has too much time and wants IT all. Mainly the one thing that is out of reach; the thing called love and he aims for the top, for the crème-de-la-crème, the type of love you read about in fairytales.

The trip towards this titanic goal takes us on a rollercoaster ride, which, in real life can only be named; ‘The Charlie Sheen’. A thrill ride with drugs, alcohol, mindless sex, rude behavior and an overdose of self-pitty. With this description, we should conclude that ‘love lasts three years’ is penny novel material with a pink ‘As seen on MTV’ stamp.

Lucky, there is a reason why this book should be considered good. So good that I actually blame it for a large percentage of break ups and divorces. This book is the ‘get out of the matrix red pill’, very effective for couples who are together for all the wrong reasons. The red pill is applied by metaphors, it is in the way Beigbeder manages to describe the small details like holding hands with a person you no longer love, the suffocating tentacles of an octopus.

Love last three years forces readers to think about ‘what you have’ and ‘what is still out there’. To name it; the type of love you waste all your time and money on, the thing that shatters your ego and your mental health, the thing that is worth that and much more.

Beigbeder manages to make the rollercoaster ride enjoyable by painting pictures we all understand, relate to, lived through, enjoyed or even suffered under. While communicating a feeling or manipulating a reader should come easy to an advertisement guy like Beigbeder, but anyone should value the manner he does so. The references to music, literature and the sheer depth of the metaphors quickly remove the ‘As seen on MTV’ and replaces it with a genuine ‘Approved by Oscar Wilde’

The book, while short, should be considered as an enjoyable flash, like shot of good tequila. You sit for a good glass of red wine, you slam tequila.. You might not remember the shot the following morning, but at night, you never felt so understood.
