I don't know what it was about this book, but it captivated me. It tells the story of a family broken apart by the continual and final running away of their 13-year old daughter. At the time of the novel, she is turning 18. You spend much of the book trying to figure out what motivated her behavioral change from sweet girl to troubled child. It is obvious there was an event that preceded her running away. The voice shifts mostly between the runaway and her mom, but her father and brother also have voices in the story. The diversity (culturally and financially) of the Miami community also plays a role as the backdrop of the story.
