Wow, this was a great story. The writing was almost perfectly paced...a couple things just kinda jumped out (for example, it wasn't revealed until a few chapters in that the protagonist had a wife) and that made it read a little choppy occasionally, but wow overall.
The serial killer Smith creates is believable and even sympathetic and it would be interesting in any setting, but Smith ups the ante with the Stalinist Soviet Union...a scary enough place in itself apparently. The suffering is tangible and the story itself really beautiful, in a grotesque kind of way.
