I enjoyed this book, but it is definitely a heart breaker. I guess I would recommend this to someone who really loves the heart wrenching stories where you get to the end and go "really? BUMMER". Well, bummer is speaking a little lightly here.
As far as the technical rating, preference aside, it merits a solid three stars. McEwan goes on descriptive tirades that go on for pages that are quite tedious. Warning though, some of the lengthy discourse will give you subtle hints to the ending, so take it like a challenge and see if you can guess it ;)
Note: I actually prefer the movie to the book (now having read the book). The movie is done beautifully, and the ending is all the more shocking. I'd say better use of your time to watch the movie with a few friends on a night where you feel like being a little sad.
