Uh...I didn't get it.

I realize that Ms. Priest books are part of a larger narrative, but I found this book to be unrewarding. The characters don't have a whole lot of depth. And as a Black American, I find the idea of a escaped slave choosing to work with a ex-Confederate spy in any capacity somewhat laughable.

I found nothing to make me read the other books in the series. It seems that the moral implications of the Civil War are lost on the characters in the book. The war itself seems to be only a backdrop for the stories to be set in. There's no discussion of the impact of advanced technology or it's implications for good or ill and Ms. Priest seems incapable of giving me a reason to care what goes on in the world she created.

Perhaps I should've started off with Boneshaker, but the its premise didn't seem all that attractive to me...maybe someone can recommend a reason to keep reading her work...
