It's good, but it kinda suffers the curse of all Part II's of trilogies in that it's really just a transition between book 1 and book 2. The underlying message - a sort of anti-church thing - is more explicit in this book (it is, in fact, extremely explicit, in that the goal seems to be to kill God), which I kind of liked. I could see being annoyed by it if I weren't an atheist though. Meh, whatever. It's a good book, but out of the context of the trilogy, I wouldn't really give a shit about it.
