I was so excited to find out that Robert Sharenow had a new book, and this one didn't disappoint. Karl Stern, 15, doesn't identify himself as a Jew, but by Nazi rule he is one because of his three Jewish grandparents. As the Nazis take over Berlin, Karl escapes the horrible situation by taking boxing lessons with Max Schmeling, pride of the Aryan race and an old friend of his father's. I don't know how Sharenow does it, but even handling the hardest subject matter, he manages to keep his prose lyrical, almost light. A must-read for all historical fiction fans.
