Summer is here and Rosalind, the eldest of the girls, is not accompanying the others, so for the first time Skye will be OAP. So Skye, Jane and Batty set off for Maine with Aunt Claire, as well as their old friend, Jeffrey.

These delightfully unique children are vividly filled with life through Birdsall's lyrical pen. Each voice wonderfully unique, and without Rosalind's presence, Skye and jane really develop before our eyes. They settle into their cozy cottage, with a perilously rocky shore, enthusiastic dogs and seagulls, skating park, and a charming next-door neighbor. But can Skye cope with various crises and not let Batty explode? Will Jane mange to write her new Sabrina Star novel after her soul is crushed by the uncaring Dominic? Is Batty the only musical Penderwick? Will aunt Clare's accident force them back to Boston? Will Jeffrey accept the transforming revelation this vacation brings?

A summer vacation we would all have loved... full of adventure, new relationships, roasted marshmallows, joy and tears.
