This is not his best book. That said, it was the first book that made me consider vegetarianism. There were many parts that I enjoyed, but there were also many parts that were not logical to me. I appreciated his awe of the world and his respect for nature.
As an example, while I believe in The people creating change, I cannot justify blowing up a dam. I believe there is another way. Dams are ugly structures that damage communities. They destroy local ways of living. This is true, but we also must admit that many of us benefit from the placement.
We are part of the machine that drives these "developments." Do I agree with them? No. Have I personally lived within communities impacted by dams? Yes. Did I personally feel the guilt and outrage from their damage. Yes. Still, there remains a danger in blowing up the dam. I believe that we can change the system (again, we often drive it).
