Reading Borges was one of the strangest and mesmerising expierences of my life.
Borges uses many different styles in this book including commentaries on imaginary books, fantasies, murder mysteries and many stories purpose which does not become clear until the last paragraph.
Within these tales Borges covers many themes -- time, infinitude, mirrors, libraries, memory, language, insomnia but also duels, honour, and fate -- and for those with more philosophical and inquiring minds than mine they will get alot more out of these 17 (very short) stories than I did which was more than I have ever got out of collection of short stories before.
The book is divided into two halves one published 1941 the other 1944. The first half includes most of the imaginary book commentaries which really did not do it for me immediately but re-reading each story give me a much better appreciation of want Borges was doing.
