Terry Pratchet is certainly not a writer lacking in imagination. His Discworld is an immaculately and intricately created universe which provides a very clever joke at the expense of mainstream fantasy fiction. The Colour of Magic was Pratchett's first Discworld novel and seems so rich and deep that you wonder if he had planned every detail of the history, culture, geography and mythology of his imaginary universe. And if he hadn't, he has done a remarkably good job of building the offhand references in this book up to the comprehensive world which now spans dozens of novels.
