This book was hard for me to get through. It is riddled with stereotypes and offensive fat phobic crap. I'm really wondering why it's on the Battle of Books list this year. I'm going to have to talk with the committee that selects young adult fiction and ask them why this was a selection.

There are so many students struggling with acceptance at this age. It may be comforting to read about a character who is struggling with issues of self acceptance if she/he had a supportive family. Perhaps this book is trying to be "real" and I'm sure unfortunately in many parts of America the story could be realistic. This book touches on issues of class, race, gender, and body issues - but I'm not sure it does so in a constructive manner.
