I devoured this story and I really do praise the ‘un putdownable’ quality of the book. It definitely could have been a book that challenged ideas of family and corporeal punishment and explored the way different cultures react to these things… and I commend the author for at least partially achieving this and making me think about how I regard corporeal punishment in regards to children. However, in saying this, the book was mainly left with cheap caricatures of different ethnicities and religions and a somewhat failed attempt at being ‘gritty’ and ‘realistic’.
