A novel featuring characters that should appeal to me (snobby graduating undergrads with no direct hope of success, yet we all think we're going to be the Next Big Thing), that morphed into primarily a book about loving/dealing with someone suffering from a mental illness. Yes, structurally the book is about 'the marriage plot,' but it's genius resides in its completely accurate portrayal of how mental illness (in this case, a severe case of manic depression) overtakes everything. Even the main character seemingly the farthest from the bipolar character cannot escape the touch of madness, and its self-centered hegemony of attention.
