JR Ward BDB & Kresley Cole IAD fans
There’s something about this book that keeps you turning the pages but it’s not a great book which is weird. I liked the premise and the story keeps moving but I didn’t like the syrupiness and some of the strange comparisons/descriptions Showalter uses. For example she talks about the “smell of moonlight”—how does moonlight smell????? That was the one that struck me the most but there were other odd things like that, it’s almost as if she’s trying too hard to draw the reader in and overcompensates.
Maddox is a cool hero but I didn’t particularly like Ashlyn. I found her annoying and cloying. She's everyone's best friend too fast. I know she didn’t have any family but all that sudden gushing and caring about everyone was too rushed for me.
Showalter has a very breezy writing style that I think would be better suited for humor like the way Kresley Cole uses humor in her IAD series. The smart-aleckyness stuck out a bit sometimes but when she wrote about Anya it flowed better. The Lords altogether reminded me of JR Ward’s BDB but without Ward’s flair for writing.
I really liked the other Lords and I’m keen on finding out their stories—Paris and Torin’s are at the top of the list. She gives them such horrible punishments to be cursed with you have to wonder how they’re going to overcome them and find that “true love”.
It’s a weak 4 star rating that I’d give the book. It looks like a series with potential though and I’ll certainly be picking up books 2 & 3.
