This is a sprawling historical novel based in Chacago and spanning around the globe that tells the story of an expedition into the South Seas for tribal artifacts. Central to the story are orphans Owen Graves and Argus Niu, a houseboy in the New Hebrides. Smith's story beautifully depicts the two very different worlds and the intereactions of its characters. It is a colossal work that I found very tough to get into but once I did it was fascinating.
