Seabiscuit an American Legend By: Laura Hillenbrand
The author’s purpose in writing Seabiscuit an American Legend is to inform the reader about the legendary tale of Seabiscuit and the Great Depression. In the novel, Laura Hillenbrand displayed why sports are so critical to our society. Though this story takes place during times of record unemployment rates and acute economic hardship, people were still interested in watching sports as a form of release from the depressing economic state. This is demonstrated by the description of the One Hundred Thousand Dollar Race. The book says “By midafternoon, seventy-eight thousand people had crammed into the track, more than ten thousand on the infield alone. (Hillenbrand 319) ” Though many people were struggling to survive and pay off great amounts of debt, great amounts of people were still interested in going to watch a sporting event. The record grand prize of a race was financeable during the Great Depression only because of the fans’ great interest in sports.
The theme of Seabiscuit an American Legend is taking advantage of second chances. This theme was stated indirectly by the author. Seabiscuit was the son of one of the greatest disappointments in sports history (35). Though Seabiscuit was the grandson of one of the greatest racehorses in history, there was little interest in Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit was regarded as a lazy horse that had no future in racing (37) before he was bought by Charles Howard (46). The purchase by Charles Howard turned out as a great investment.
This book was written in an extremely effective way. The book was very easy to understand even if the reader is not a horseracing fan. This story was a narration. The events in the story were described and told to the reader.
Seabiscuit an American Legend is a terrific book. Reading about an underdog like Seabiscuit was extremely interesting. As an avid sports fan I liked reading about how sports gave people pride and hope during a disappointing span of history. This story is dissimilar from any story I have previously read. It was very entertaining while discussing history.
