 rating: 5 of 5 stars The third book of the Gardella vampire Chronicle is still set in Rome. Horrible murders occur and Victoria, who has inherited the title "Illa Gardella" from her aunt, is determined to get to the bottom of it and find the one responsible for the beheaded corpses. Victoria and her fellow Venators come across their research to the Villa Palombara, the home of a former alchemist who sought the secret of immortality and who has hidden his results behind the "Door of Alchemy" which nobody is able to open without the right three keys. They want to find out why vampires and demons – usually arch-enemies – have joined forces and are suddenly so interested in the alchemist´s laboratory...
 This is again a very exciting and suspenseful book, not everything is as it seems to be. Victoria as Illa Gardella has more responsibilities and problems than ever which increase with the unexpected arrival of her mother and her two friends, the Ladies Winnie and Nilly to attend the Carnivale in Rome.
 Max who has left at the end of the second book comes back with a "gift" from Lilith which can change his future – but it naturally comes with a high price. When Victoria meets Sebastian under desperate circumstances he tells her that the demon Akvan has returned from hell but in a weakened state and that he´s also interested in the Magical Door. Sebastian admits finally some of his secrets and Victoria is furious with him because of his concealment of important facts of his life and it´s surely not increasing Victoria´s trust into him. But still there is their attraction to each other which cannot be denied on either side. 
 Ah, Max and Sebastian – my previous dilemma continues, which one to choose? Or should be the right one someone entirely different like the Venator Zavier whom Victoria encourages? Victoria seemed to be a bit too self-absorbed and spoiled regarding men in this volume and I really started to think that her character hasn´t improved and she hadn´t learned anything from her previous mistakes. But I can understand her yearning for being recognized as a woman and not only as a Venator. She has still strong feelings for Sebastian which are mutual and he proves at the end of the book how much he is able to give up for her. Both men are likeable in their own way and I´m really curious how the author will solve this problem. I can see no solution at the moment (okay, I COULD see one but I fear that´s not the one Colleen Gleason or the two men in this book have in mind..lol). The plot is again exciting and interesting and I´m really looking forward to the fourth book "When Twilight burns"!
