I've read this novel more often than any other. First, I read it for myself as a kid. Second, I read it aloud to a girlfriend as a bedtime book. Third, I read it aloud to my niece during visits to her home in Michigan.
It is not the best novel I've ever read, just a safe one. Personally, I liked the early part of Bilbo's adventures, after he leaves the Shire but before he gets into the real wilds. The woods described are reminiscent of actual experience. The extraordinary dangers are just that--extraordinary, the kinds of things a kid worries about while walking home on a forest trail in the dark. Later on, when the landscapes grow weird and the evils become legion, I get bored.
