Saw this on Keri's list, thought I'd add my two cents...

Here it is, the book that started the musical mania...and for once, I'm going to boldly declare that the derivative was better than the source. I loved the musical, and found it much more satisfying than the book (which got oddly disturbing...and somewhat disjointed). However, thank you Gregory Maguire, for the story that started it all.

I've also read all of Maguire's other books, except Son of a Witch, and liked them well enough, but probably not enough to re-read, if that tells you anything. I'm a fan of re-tellings of fairy tales, and there is always an aspect of his versions that I find appealing, but never the entirety.
