I read YA -- most of it fantasy - and every once in a while, I take a deep breath and dive into a character-driven book. Looking for "guy books", I picked up "Stupid Fast" - it had a cool title. The book is so much more! Stupid Fast is a tale of a young man who finds his way - at least for a while and has a glimpse of his adult future (although that can wait for now.)
Felton Feinstein's voice is clear and resonant, his family is unforgettable, both marred and shaped by his father's suicide when Feinstein was five years old. And, part of growing up is claiming your family with all of its secrets, quirks, and insanity -- and then claiming your own life.

In some ways, it reminded me of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Haddon.
Language is realistic for high school boys and troubled, beleaguered mothers who have held it together on their own for too long.
