It's been a few years, but what I remember liking about this book is it's based on an actual murder scene where there are no witnesses other than the crazed woman who escaped or plausible explanations about who could have rowed out to this remote island and back in the night without being detected (although someone was executed for it). The narrator finds a confession from the survivor of what really happened and gives story to the relationships between these 19th century women that were all in the house that night and their husbands and brothers who were on the mainland at the time. I thought the story of these immigrant women was creative and interesting, but I can't remember anything about the narrator.
