Tar Beach is a whimsical, creative story written about a little girl with a great imagination. The author tells a story about a little girl who has a wonderful imagination. She dreams that she can fly and when she does, anything she wishes comes true. The George Washington Bridge is hers, she is rich, her father owns a building, Mommy laughs, she can eat ice cream for dinner every night and she can go wherever she wants for the rest of her life. The hardships of being a minority are explored in this book. Illustrated through painted pictures using acrylic on canvas paper, page borders using quilt characteristics, and bright color, this tale is weaved like a story quilt. The author used her quilt-making and painting background to create an interesting story all will love.
