I love Margaret George novels, and I like the opportunity they present to play around with history and make the 'great leaders' a little more human. Margaret George creates a layered, nuanced feminist adventure novel with her Cleopatra. Cleopatra isn't either otherworldly or a heartless bitch; in this novel she's a headstrong, hopeful and cultured woman with needs and desires. George walks the fine line of making Cleopatra sympathetic without over doing it. It's a tough job, but she pulls it off.
