** spoiler alert ** Finnish-American May Amelia is growing up on the Nasel River in Washington state at the beginning of the 1900s. It's a tough life. Her large family, of which she is the only girl, is trying hard to make a living farming. It's especially hard for May Amelia for there are few neighbors (none are girls anyway) and she is definitely NOT a doted-upon baby sister--her father sees her as a Useless Girl and her brothers, naturally, follow the tone their father has set. Her father, Jalmer, tells May Amelia to translate for him when a English-speaking developer comes to town. When the developer turns out to be a swindler, Jalmer lays the blame for their devastating situation on 12-year-old May Amelia. Her father is a hard, stubborn, prideful man--can May Amelia ever redeem herself in his eyes?

Spoiler Alert: Their hardships include a logging accident, a boating accident, and an unseen attempted murder in addition to the swindling scheme.
