Envy is a great book, going behind the scenes at a publishing house and showing the intrigues to obtain writers and the subterfuges editors will go through to keep them. A good portion of it will be enlightening even for those of us who’ve already been published. In this tale, in one way or another, no one is whom he appears to be. The story is intriguing, entertaining, and suspenseful as Parker, willing to sacrifice himself and his love for Maris, sees his plan for revenge through to the end. There’s always the question of whether or not he’ll succeed, and also how much better he’d be if he fails. His courtship of Maris startles even himself as he discovers her not to be anything like he expected, and its outcome is all the more poignant because he forges on with his plan in spite of the love he begins to experience.

One caveat: The last sentence will drive you crazy.

After reading this, the writers among us may hesitate the next time they want to brag about a manuscript sale, or will probably look askance at those friends who haven’t yet been published. It’s a chilling story of a friendship gone deadly, because of… Envy.
