Definitely slower than the first - you can feel the story beginning to get dragged down by the weight of the additional characters added. There's too many. The first was clean and crisp, but now there are too many knights, kings, and their assorted associates to keep a track of. Different story arcs are moving at different speeds, too - so making sure that everything lines up for the climax means you have to throw in superfluous incidents in some and hurry up others - all of which leads to a slightly disjointed experience.
Not that it's bad - decent enough read, but definitely unwieldy. I'll think of it as the Empire Strikes Back to Game Of Thrones' New Hope. It's definitely darker, despite the clear shift in the tide towards our main protagonists - let's see what the next few have to add.
