Draws you in from line one: "The first time my husband hit me I was nineteen years old." Covers an important social issue only recently gaining a voice in the public sphere. Although the book narrates one unique instance of domestic violence, it offers a realistic and insightful look into some of the complex emotions and circumstances constraining the protagonist's choices. At times, difficult to read about such an extreme case of violence, but still, an ultimately empowering book of survival and new beginnings.
