really liked it
bookshelves: favourites, owned, fantasy

The Death Gate Cycle is one of my favourite fantasy series, but I've always felt that Dragon Wing makes a poor 'first entry' in the series. Don't get me wrong, the book is very good. But if you finish the book and you resent everyone in it except Haplo & Alfred (very much my experience), take heart. As these two complex and likeable characters are the focus of the entire series. Alfred features among my all-time favourite protagonists.

In my opinion, the full scope and strength of the series doesn't become apparent until at least the 2nd entry. I say all this from experience (to this day I can't convince my fantasy-loving family to read past Dragon Wing). The division of reality into 4 element based worlds (that are each well constructed) is freaking genius. But again, you don't quite realize the scope until later entries.

Read this series. I highly doubt you will regret it.
