Darkness Over Denmark: The Danish Resistance and the Rescue of the Jews
by Ellen Levine
Ginny, Thanks. I know about these events and would like to read a non-fiction book how the Danish people helped save Jewish lives during the Nazi holocaust. This looks like a good choice.
Hi Lisa. This is a good introduction to the topic and I think you'll like it. I'd still like to read something with more depth (that's not a criticism of this book, as it was written for ages 10 and up) and really haven't been able to find anything. I'm sort of surprised. It's one of history's great inspiring stories and also a very interesting one because the reaction of the Dane's to the situation in Europe was so unique. I would think there would be a whole bunch of books about this!
I might do some research - if I remember. ;-) If I find any other books, I'll certainly get back to you. I agree wholeheartedly about it being an important and unique true story.
I did a quick google book serach and got this page:

I don't have time to look now, but it appears that there may be a few books that are all or partly about the Danes saving their Jewish citizens during the Nazi era.
Thanks, Lisa. I had searched only on amazon. But, although it seems like there are plenty of books that mention this story, I still didn't see many that are completely devoted to it. (Lots of interesting books on that list, though!)
I haven't looked closely at it yet. If there aren't any books about the subject for adult readers, it might be a good subject for someone's master's thesis or dissertation. I would love to read in depth about this.

This is the remarkable story of how the Denmark saved Danish Jews during World War II, written for young adults (ages 10 and up). It is such an incredible story of goodness, courage and deep moral conviction, and Ellen Levine tells it very well, outlining the history of the occupation in Denmark interspersed with personal accounts and wonderful photographs. She debunks some of the myths about the Danish rescues and explores some of the reasons why it was even possible to save most of the country’s Jewish population—mostly because of the proximity of neutral Sweden. The chronology of the story got a little confusing at times, but that’s a minor criticism. Overall, the author does a wonderful job in telling one of the best stories in history.
