Wow, I thought "Shanghai Girls" was tragic... but it's nothing compared to "Dreams of Joy"! What a harrowing story! To be quite honest, this book made me rather grateful to live in the U.S. Things might be pretty rough for our country, but it's obvious that things could be so much worse.

Political commentary aside, this was truly an important story to read and quite engaging as well. I think I enjoyed this book even more than "Shanghai Girls", most likely because May was not in the story hardly at all. I appreciated that Joy's character became more fully developed and found that I didn't dislike her as much as I did by the end of "Shanghai Girls". I hope that there may be more stories about this family in the future, though I'm not sure any of them could go through anymore tragedies, so perhaps I should just hope for a happy future for them all!
