I am Nujood is the story of a 10 year-old girl from Yemen who is sold off as a child bride to a much elder man who physically and sexually assaults her. Taking the advice of her father's second wife, Nujood flees from her family home and appeals to the Court for a divorce. Nujood's story is certainly worth telling and the issues the book attempts to deal with - child marriage, child trafficking, etc. are of great importance. The main problem with this book is that it is far too simplistic for the adult reader. This book was not published as a children's book and yet it written on this level. As written, the book is too simplistic and childlike for adult readers but perhaps a bit too graphic for pre-teens. Adult readers will be left longing for a more sophisticated account of Nujood's life experiences. I was particularly troubled by the lack of attention paid to the risks of returning Nujood to her family after her divorce. I am sure Nujood's story is more complex than what the author chooses to share with us.
