True horror doesn't come from the outside like from a haunted house or some kind of monster, but from inside the human mind or soul. And in this novel Shirley Jackson admirably shows how this comes to pass. I'Ll have to think more about this book before I completely understand it, if that is even possible. And of course there is more than one interpretation. Like We Have Always Lived in the Castle
the atmosphere created is unique and striking. What disturbs me most is that the ending seems somehow positive.
