Typically this isn't the kind of book I'm drawn to--it's dark, quiet, meditative, a slow churn. It's a story that rewards patience and the attention to allegory, too--Hamlet being the obvious one. For me, though, the most unique thing about this book is how it looks at the inner lives of dogs. The crushing chapter on Almondine (Edgar's longtime companion) at the end is unforgettable.
