Whew! This is a very surprising novel because it is so intense and laced with lots of secondary characters and subplots. Too many IMO. I would have rather had fewer family messes/events happening and more about the 3 main characters and their relationship. In fact I wouldn’t even call this an erotica novel. Yeah, there’s a lot of sex in it, but it’s not terribly descriptive, romantic, or erotic like the cover suggests. So don’t judge this novel by its awesome cover.

Instead this novel reminds me more of a literary novel. I’m so used to Emma Holly treating ménage in a funny, sweet, and very romantic way. Forget that with this novel. The dynamics are the same as in a Holly novel but the outcome is very different. I know Hart meant the ending to be bittersweet, but to me it was just plain sad. Heartbreakingly sad. Too many holes in the plot. Just consider yourself warned.…this is not a light read.

Also, if you come from an alcoholic family (especially if your father is/was an alcoholic), be prepared. This novel is going to rip open old wounds and leave them raw. No ointment in this one. Maybe that’s the other reason this novel was so unsatisfying for me. I know how this family dynamic works, and for those of us who know (really know) this ending doesn’t ring true. The heroine just chose another dysfunctional escape. Can you say “The Prince of Tides”?
