** spoiler alert ** First a spoiler alert. If you read this to the end the surprising twist in the book might be some how spoiled.

This book has a lot of potential. The subject is very interesting and the historical background, as other pointed out was done very thoroughly. The story takes you into the life and rival of those who hold the magician craft in the 2nd half of the 19th century. This is the most interested part. The narration by Simon Vance is great (as always) and all in all this is not a bad book to read.

However, the author has chosen to take the book toward the end into the non realistic world. I find it unnecessary and kind of "breaking" the contract between the author and the reader as how to resolve the mystery.

Its like reading a detective story where a body was found in a locked room. with the key inside the door and with no one that had an access to it. You expect some kind of creative solution to the mystery, but if the author's solution is that a ghost entered the room and left the body there than one may consider the book to be childish at the best.
