I love that this novel is half historical fiction and half graphic novel. Jennie is a seventeen year old young orphan whose twin brother has just died in the Civil War and her fiancé and cousin has just died as well. Her fiance’s younger brother (also her cousin) comes home from Andersonville POW camp disfigured and disabled. As a family, but particularly Jennie gets involved with a Spiritualist who take photographs—of the living and their dead. Jennie’s ghosts won’t leave her alone, which is a good thing, for she requires their protection—from those still alive.
