Let me say first that this, unlike "Outside Over There", is not a children's book. I'm sure it has been read to children in the past, but those poor children are being exposed to something that most parents are not ready to be explaining to preschoolers. The obvious sexual references are pervasive, though cleverly done. The story is very good, and the images are rich.
I think this is much closer to YA than other Sendak works. It would probably fit in best from late middle school to maybe 9th grade. Those students would probably get the references and appreciate the imagery without being traumatized by facts they already know. Whether a teacher could actually get away with it or not, I'm on the fence about. I think it would come down to the school system on a case-by-case situation.
