Another excellent young teen book from this very dependable author. Strong female characters are what she does well, and there's lots of that here without too heavily invoking that annoying teen comes out of nowhere and leaves adults in their wake solving great huge problems with no previously-honed skills sort of gimmick. In fact, I like that this protagonist is working hard to learn her trade--too many kids' fantasy books paint skills acquisition as innate, requiring no practice before they blossom fully-developed (and of course all-conquering), and I'm not sure that's a terribly useful message. This book, I'll readily recommend to our readers.
