A mix of deep and superficial, dramatic and farcical, White Noise is like a Vonnegut and Palahniuk chimera--think equal parts Timequake and Fight Club, Hocus Pocus and Choke. Unfortunately, DeLillo isn't able to find the right mix of each, and White Noise suffers from the imbalance of meaningful theme and dynamic plot; the action is forced and underdeveloped while the message is painstakingly obvious. Still, for having been written in 1985, this is a startingly accurate look at what life is like in the secular, digital age.
