An interesting conclusion, a new idea, though a bit empty.

I read this a second time recently, after having coincidentally JUST read Homicide by David Simon. On this second reading, it's very (VERY) obvious where Amis got his background/research on being a homicide detective - from that very book. Many minor bits feel almost entirely ripped off from Homicide.

The female protagonist written by a male author is still interesting, as is the conclusion. However, the near-plagiarism from Simon's work smacks of laziness. David Simon spent a year of research as a police intern to write Homicide. Martin Amis simply read Homicide.

If you haven't read Homicide, then this is a very interesting book, and quick. But if you have, it takes away from it.
