really liked it

An interesting read. Exhaustive at times, but wide in scope. It begins with an engaging depiction of the first rise of civilizations in five river valleys stretching from the Nile to the Yellow river. Focusing on narratives and accounts found in early developments of written languages, and in the accounts of ancient historians, Bauer gives a clear succession of cultural influences over a period of over 3000 years in an area touching on three continents. A great body of knowledge for anyone to experience.
