A few years ago, I read Stephenson's CRYPTONOMICON. I thought it was awesome. This one...not so awesome. It's definitely a cybernovel, which I sort of knew going in, so I had some misgivings. I should have listened to my misgivings this time. While the book starts out relatively interestingly, and there are some intriguing characters (especially the "Mr. Moto"-type character, the Aleut with a score to settle, Raven), the plot devolves into post-modern sci-fi silliness of the highest order. With highspeed skateboarding, virtual reality swordfights, and a futuristic dystopia in which (ho hum) corporations control the world, in the end, SNOW CRASH is just your run-of-the-mill testosterone-driven cyber novel.
